Scientists from Afyon Kocatepe University (AKÜ) have been awarded funding under the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) “1001 – Scientific and Technological Research Projects Support Program” for their project entitled “Investigation of Sediments in the Western Anatolian Neogene Basin in Terms of Lithium Source: A Case Study of the Demirci (Manisa) Neogene Basin.”

The project is led by Prof. Dr. Ahmet YILDIZ, a faculty member of the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Afyon Kocatepe University. The research team includes Assoc. Prof. Dr. Can BAŞARAN and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin BAĞCI from the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering; Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Fatih CAN from the Department of Mining Engineering, Faculty of Engineering; and Dr. Cüneyt BİRCAN, a faculty member of the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Balıkesir University, as researchers. The project advisor is Prof. Dr. Yaşar KİBİCİ.

Providing information about the project entitled “Investigation of Sediments in the Western Anatolian Neogene Basin in Terms of Lithium Source: A Case Study of the Demirci (Manisa) Neogene Basin,” Prof. Dr. Ahmet YILDIZ stated that the project will have a total duration of three years. Within the scope of the project, geological factors affecting the concentration and distribution of lithium in the region, as well as the economic evaluation conditions of lithium-bearing clays, will be determined. The outputs obtained from the project are expected to guide pilot-scale and investment projects to be established in the region for lithium production, thereby contributing to the reduction of Türkiye’s dependence on foreign resources and supporting the national economy.
